“Prince of Thorns is the best book I’ve read all year...[Lawrence] pulls you in and doesn’t let go.”—Peter V. Brett, New York Times bestselling author of The Skull Throne “This is a lean, cold knife-thrust of a novel, a revenge fantasy anchored on the compelling voice and savage purpose of its titular Prince. There is never a safe moment in Lawrence’s debut.”—Robert Redick, author of The River of Shadows “Dark and relentless, the Prince of Thorns will pull you under and drown you in story. A two in the morning page turner.”—Robin Hobb, author of Assassin's Fate “[A] morbidly gripping, gritty fantasy tale.”—Publishers Weekly “Vivid…smooth and compelling...gritty and full of wonder. This book is brilliant.”—Galaxy Book Reviews “Disturbing, beautiful, chaotic, poetic, haunting, exhilarating.”—Fantasy Faction “Without a doubt the most original and most memorable fantasy debut of 2011. It’s difficult to imagine how another book could top this one.”—RisingShadows.net “2011 is turning into another year for impressive genre debuts, but at this point Prince of Thorns is arguably the most impressive and stunning...Highly recommended.”—SFFworld.com “Defies the conventions of epic fantasy by invoking them only to take a savage delight in tearing them apart.”—Locus Mark Lawrence is a research scientist working on artificial intelligence. He is a dual national with both British and American citizenship, and has held secret-level clearance with both governments. At one point, he was qualified to say, “This isn’t rocket science—oh wait, it actually is.” He is the author of the Broken Empire trilogy (Prince of Thorns, King of Thorns, and Emperor of Thorns), the Red Queen’s War trilogy (Prince of Fools, The Liar’s Key, and The Wheel of Osheim) and the Book of the Ancestor series (Red Sister).
“Prince of Thorns deserves attention as the work of an iconoclast who seems determined to turn that familiar thing, Medievalesque Fantasy Trilogy, entirely on its head.”—Locus
When he was nine, he watched as his mother and brother were killed before him. By the time he was thirteen, he was the leader of a band of bloodthirsty thugs. By fifteen, he intends to be king...
It’s time for Prince Honorous Jorg Ancrath to return to the castle he turned his back on, to take what’s rightfully his. Since the day he hung pinned on the thorns of a briar patch and watched Count Renar’s men slaughter his mother and young brother, Jorg has been driven to vent his rage. Life and death are no more than a game to him—and he has nothing left to lose.
But treachery awaits him in his father’s castle. Treachery and dark magic. No matter how fierce his will, can one young man conquer enemies with power beyond his imagining?
Lawrence as a terrific reputation as an author and I’d just spent money ... I’d never read a Mark Lawrence novel before and thought I’d give this one a shot. I was very confused when I started the book. I thought it was supposed to be about a prince trying to recover his throne. However as I read the first chapter it seemed to be about a murderer and rapist. I thought that maybe I was getting a chapter from the antagonist’s point of view. Then I started chapter two and it was the same POV from the same villain. I stopped reading part way through chapter two when the protagonist described a rape he’d participated in. I thought to myself that there was no way I was going to read 300 pages about this @#$# @#$%$.If it had been an unknown author, I probably would have stopped at that point. However, Lawrence as a terrific reputation as an author and I’d just spent money on a book and was ticked off that I’d only read a chapter and a half. So I kept reading. And it kept getting better. And better. And better. As it turns out there a reason why the protagonist is a murdering @#$#%.The writing is excellent. The story is engrossing. The world building is intriguing. Lawrence writes terrific action scenes to top it off.Be forewarned, the book is very grim and very dark. If you can get past that, I think you’ll love the novel.Unique Not bad. Jorg is an interesting MC, certainly unique in that his sort of character-type in other stories is always the side guy or villain rather than the main protagonist in this one, which is the point of course. And rather than turn evil, like some Star Wars prequel story, Jorg was always this way.I will say this, Mark puts a lot of effort into the way he writes and how Jorg comes across through words, and I have to admire his ambition, but I couldn't help but feel like Jorg was just perpetually lucky rather than clever. This twist cheapened many of the victories, and also the lack of interesting side characters, all counted against me deciding to buy the next one immediately after finishing the first. That's not to say I won't ever return, as this was still a fun and exciting read, but I wasn't hooked by the briar patch, so to speak.A Great Surprise I got this, without giving it much consideration, on a Kindle recommendation. To my surprise, this was an exceptionally good read. The story line is NOT your average fantasy historical. I was afraid, with all the blood and battle, it would be more appealing to male readers; but this book would appeal to anyone who enjoys a good story and a great character piece. I'm a girl who loves a character study and a unique adventure. The Prince is unabashedly bloodthirsty; yet I was forced to like him. A lot of writers try it, but few really pull off the villain-who's-really-a-hero. The action is page turning, and the characters are complex and interesting. And, another surprise, there's humor just when you think it's getting too dark. Love it! I can't wait to read Mr. Lawrence's follow-up.
