Heaven (Casteel Book 1) Pdf

ISBN: B004CLYL44
Title: Heaven (Casteel Book 1) Pdf
From the legendary New York Times bestselling author of Flowers in the Attic and My Sweet Audrina (now Lifetime movies) comes the first book in the Casteel Family series—for fans of Emma Donoghue (Room) and Kay Hooper (Amanda).

Of all the folks on the mountain, the Casteel children are the lowest.

Even the families that buy them think so.

Heaven Leigh Casteel may be the prettiest, smartest girl in the backwoods, but her cruel father and weary stepmother work her like a mule. For the sake of her brother Tom and the other little ones, Heaven clings to the hope that someday she can show the world that they are worthy of love and respect.

But when the children’s stepmother can’t take it anymore and abandons the family, Heaven’s father hatches a scheme that will alter her young life forever. Being sold to a strange couple is just the beginning; ripping away the thin veneer of civilization and learning the adult secrets of the world around her means Heaven must abandon someone, too—the child she was, to become the woman her mother never had the chance to be.

Hasn't Lost It's Luster I first read this book around the time I was 15; almost 30 years later, I decided to order a new copy and see if it was still as good as I remembered . . . and yes, it is. . . V.C. Andrews' portrayal of the dirt-poor lives of Heaven and her family is among the most vivid descriptions of fictional poverty I've ever read. The characters seem real, and each and every side-character could have a book of his or her own. There are no two-dimensional characters here. Characters such as Fanny (Heaven's sister) may at first seem a certain way on the surface, but once you get into the story, you begin to understand that each character is just trying to survive, in their own individual ways.I will say that the relationship between Heaven and Cal Dennison strikes me quite differently now as I read the story in my 40s as it did when I was 15.The depth of all the characters is superb, and I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a cast of fully fleshed-out characters.Side-note: times have certainly changed when it comes to book-making. Readers of the original paperback will recall that it was released with a double-cover; you'd open the cover, to reveal a portrait of Heaven standing in the midst of her family. This type of cover was common among paperbacks of the 1970s and 1980s ("Heaven" was first released in 1985). With the newer reprint, the front cover is just a single cover with Heaven's face; the family portrait is on the back of the book. Yet another unfortunate downgrading of the once-unique designs of paper-and-ink books in this age of e-books:(
