900 pages and no CD. Bought for my granddaughter. Beware over 900 pages. I had hoped it would have come with a CD for practice test. Sadly it does not.The content is the same as the previous version plus one brand new test. The current 1-2 star reviews are being a bit unfair. They are complaining about the Kindle version. To be honest, I don't know why you would want tests in the kindle version anyway, you want to take the tests on paper as you would in the test room. This book is the same as the previous edition, but they added a completely new test. I am a self-employed full-time test prep tutor and certified teacher running up to ten years of experience. The CONTENT of the book is what I'm reviewing, and I love practice tests. The new practice test is refreshing, they are also keeping the price point the same as previously, thus increasing the overall value of the book.Tests are GREAT (4 now vs. previous 3); Advice is OK; Online materials worse format than previously available; AVOID KINDLE VER. This review is for the HARD COPY version.I’ve been tutoring the ACT for over a decade, have scored perfectly on it as an adult, and have coached a student to a perfect score, as well as many others to perfect scores on individual sections. I run a Youtube channel offering free ACT / SAT prep and college advice (SupertutorTV) and also have created an online prep course for the ACT. In short, I know the ACT.When it comes to ACT prep books, the number one advice I have for my students is to USE AUTHENTIC MATERIALS from the test maker. That means if you’re taking the ACT, and can afford nothing but one book, this is the number one resource I would recommend. The ACT test got a minor reboot in 2014 when ACT added probability items to the math section, reduced the number of science passages from 7 to 6, and added a dual reading passage section. The ACT has also revamped the essay a couple of times since 2014. This book reflects all those changes better than any previous books. There are a few updates this book includes that the previous editions of the book don’t:1) A new, 4th test included in the book (awesome!). This is a recent test (form code 74C) that was administered in June 20172) Access to an online question “bank” instead of printable pdf versions of the “bonus” questions that came with older versions of this guide (2015-2016 and the latest 2016-2017 which has no date on the cover). (not awesome!). Each book includes a scratch off code, so best to purchase new, not used, if you want to take advantage of these online questions. As before, these include around 100 of each subject matter pulled from the Real ACT Prep guide that has since been taken out of print.3) Essays that reflect the latest version of the essay prompt (previously, the question required students to integrate “multiple perspectives” or all three perspectives. The newer version of the prompt is reworded and broader, asking students to incorporate “at least one” other perspective; other versions of the prep guide may not include the correct prompts for the essay). Why four stars then? Well, this update to last year’s guide has a few disappointments. My number one complaint is the fact that the question bank is now online only. Having the ability to PRINT the bonus questions made them much more valuable, and this was possible with the older version of this same guide.Studies have shown that students focus less when reading from screens and performance may be affected. Additionally, it’s best to prep using the same method you would use when actually taking the test. That makes your practice experience closer to your testing experience. Printing to paper gives students that experience. Doing questions in a question bank online doesn’t.The other issue with the question bank is that it randomizes the order of the questions and passages. Though this may not matter for some sections, in the math it means it’s harder to tell which math questions should be “easy” and which ones “hard” so that students can more easily do the ones that are most applicable to them. In the past version the start of the packet was on the easy side and around question 40 the questions got harder, and then reset after question 50 and again after question 75. It wasn’t perfect, but easier to track than this mess of an online system, at least for tutors trying to assign the hardest questions to students, or students looking for streaks of hard questions.Additionally, the OFFICIAL ACT PREP GUIDE (this book) and all versions of it borrows heavily from the previous book of ACT Tests pre 2014 changes called The Real ACT (CD) 3rd Edition (Official Act Prep Guide), particularly in the math sections (more on this below). That's kind of annoying, as it means you can't buy both books and get 9 tests. If you buy both you get more like 7 tests. I know the other one is out of print, but it would still be nice to be able to buy that book used and get even more tests to practice with in complete form. Now let’s first discuss what this includes:1) Four “real” ACT tests. The first three exams appear to be identical to the previous editions of this guide. I’ve noted the form codes these were sourced from in case you know of these past exams.Test 1 (diagnostic): English, Reading, Science (Jun 2015 73C), Math (73C+10 random questions from The Real ACT Prep Guide exams, mix of exams, and a few originals),Test 2: English, Reading, Science (Apr 2015 73G), Math (random questions from The Real ACT Prep Guide exams, mostly from Exam #2, and a few originals),Test 3:English (Test 5 from Real ACT Prep Guide), Reading, Science (Test 4 from Real ACT Prep Guide), Math (Many from test 4 from the Real ACT Prep Guide, some random from that Guide, plus a few 73G questions and a few originals.)Test 4: June 2017 Code 74C, all sections2) Essay promptsAll tests include a complete essay prompt; a fifth prompt is in the chapter on the essay, for five total prompts.3) Chapters that review the basic content of each section and have some example questionsThough this might seem to be a great resource, advice from the test makers is rarely as good as advice from private tutors who write books. I’m probably biased (I’m a private tutor who is working on writing some ACT books), but even before I wrote books, I knew the best tips I found for my students weren’t from the test makers. Ideas like “read carefully and thoroughly," are terrible advice for some students who when doing so can’t even finish half of a section. Many students are better off FINISHING than reading everything carefully. True, the book also has pacing strategies, but they aren’t written based on people who are on the ground with students trying to help them exploit test weaknesses or maximize scores. Sure, in an ideal world we we be good little students and do everything the “right” way, but real test prep is about optimization, not being a “good student.” It’s about working within the constraints of the test and maximizing your ability to get questions right. The idea that some students are different and your strategy may be different from someone else’s isn’t really accounted for here in a clear way. The voice of the book feels more objective than insightful in its advice. The biggest value of this book is the real tests, not the section advice. If you want test prep advice, get another book from an independent tutor. Still, content tips in the English and Math could be somewhat useful for those with no other resources or limited budgets.ALSO: Many of the “real” examples from these topic based chapters are part of fully released exams from prior years, such as 61C (the packet released free of charge in 2008-2009). As a result, the example material is not a huge boon for students, but actual a bit of a "spoiler" for anyone who digs up these old, free, released pdf tests online and wants to use them to practice full exams. If you’re looking to maximize your access to REAL materials, here are your other options:1) Upgrade to the The Official ACT Prep Pack with 6 Full Practice Tests (4 in Official ACT Prep Guide + 2 Online) and get access to two online tests in addition to the four tests in the book. Practicing online, though, is not ideal if you’re taking this on paper. (See my note above) (ACT now offers a small percentage of test takers the opportunity to take the test on computers, but I don’t recommend doing so).2) Get a copy of the The Real ACT (CD) 3rd Edition (Official Act Prep Guide)in addition to this book. You’ll likely want to skip most of the math sections except for anecdotal practice (particularly tests 4 and 2 which show up heavily on the math section of the newer book), but other sections are useful. Know that the reading has no dual passages, and that the science has more passages but the same number of questions. Also, avoid English test #5, and Science and Reading test #4, as these are identical to test #3 in the Official Guide you would get from this page.3) Find the previously released free exams that ACT.org has offered students from prior years before the test tweaks in 2014.There is one free right now at ACT.org, and many sites have cataloged old editions of the Preparing for the ACT packet from past years. A quick online search for Free PDF ACT practice tests or "Preparing for the ACT" pdf should help you find some of these.Overall:Get this for the tests (you can't beat real tests!)Skip most of the chapter advice by topic (Math, Science, Reading, etc.) unless you can't afford more books or alternate options.Online materials are ok but not perfect. One final note: I've also purchased the Kindle version. It is nearly illegible on the portions of the book that are the test; you can't zoom in on these pages at all so the print is so tiny it can't be read. Total waste of money. I do not recommend it at all. Previous versions on the Kindle were much better quality and were far more useable. I don't know why this one is so terrible.

“My absolute favorite L.J. Shen to date. Indulgent and addictive.” – USA Today Bestselling author RS Grey
"This book will ruin you for all other books in 2019" - Bestselling author BB Easton

From USA Today and Washington Post bestselling author L.J. Shen comes an enemies-to-lovers romance with a twist...

They say your first kiss should be earned.

Mine was stolen by a devil in a masquerade mask under the black Chicago sky.

They say the vows you take on your wedding day are sacred.

Mine were broken before we left church.

They say your heart only beats for one man.

Mine split and bled for two rivals who fought for it until the bitter end.

I was promised to Angelo Bandini, the heir to one of the most powerful families in the Chicago Outfit.

Then taken by Senator Wolfe Keaton, who held my father’s sins over his head to force me into marriage.

They say that all great love stories have a happy ending.

I, Francesca Rossi, found myself erasing and rewriting mine until the very last chapter.

One kiss.
Two men.
Three lives.
Entwined together.

And somewhere between these two men, I had to find my forever.

He was a Thief of Her Fate He was her thief of everything that mattered. The wait and anticipation was worth it! I fell in love with this story over and over again! An incredible story...he was her fate.A girl whose life was all planned out for her with none of her input. She's about to be set free even though at first it feels like a cage.I absolutely adored these characters and their many facets. A few twists and turns that kept me guessing and wondering. But ultimately it was an unforgettably epic, yet unconventional, love story. You will be on an emotional roller coaster of anger, frustration, heartbreak. wonder, lust, hate, forgiveness, indecision, acceptance and LOVE. And the ride is just beautiful. So much pain, yet there is beauty in pain. When you find the one who can help lessen your burden, and heal your heart, you never let go.Read it! You need to because you will love them as much as I do.Dark I can’t believe I’m doing this. I have never given a bad review. It’s not my style to knock someone’s baby, and after writing a story, that’s what it is to the author. This story is dark, cruel and left me sad. At no point should rape be glorified or excused. Not. Ever. Just because she yelled at him to just do it when she HAD NO CHOICE, is not consent.Never should you be disrespected, kidnapped, held against your will or belittled.I do understand the story the author was trying to tell. I also know life isn’t always sunshine, unicorns and baby animals. The story premise was interesting. It is a story which would be a hard story to tell. But broken people aren’t always cruel, mean or vindictive. One thing I was never able to figure out, was how did she even develop feelings for him when he was absolutely horrible to her in every way? When the “feelings” were developing he was not showing her anything but cruelty and disgust.I just couldn’t get into the story. It was too dark, too disturbing and left me with an overwhelming feeling of darkness and ick. I skipped more pages than I read, just skimming most of them to see if I was missing anything important. I wasn’t. Rape. Is. Wrong. Cruelty. Is. Wrong. Broken people do stupid things granted. But not on this scale.Women, it is never ok to be forced to submit, to sex, to another’s cruel behavior, to another’s will. Never. But the really disturbing part is where the readers have given this a 4.8 stars out of 5. What does that tell us about our view of ourselves and the society we live in?Prepare yourself to fall in love with the Nemesis and her villain. In my opinion, The Kiss Thief is truly unlike any other LJ Shen book to date - the tone and overall feel of the story - and I absolutely loved it!! Everything about the story from start to finish was incredible! Francesca was just a breath of fresh air, and I adored how strong and sassy she was. And Wolfe.......LJ truly writes an alpha a** unlike any other. This guy definitely tops them all. There is so much more I want to say and could say about this story, but I feel it would give too much away and sometimes you need to go into a story blind. Honestly, the only thing you really need to know about this story is that LJ Shen wrote it and that it's amazing.Gear up for a crazy, intense, emotional ride and be prepared to fall in love with the Nemesis and her villain.

Title: The Common Place of Law Pdf Stories from Everyday Life (Chicago Series in Law and Society)
Author: Patricia Ewick
Published Date: 1998-07-06
Page: 318

Why do some people take a neighbor to court over a barking dog or some other nuisance while others accept the pains and losses associated with defective products or discrimination without seeking legal recourse? Patricia Ewick and Susan S. Silbey collected accounts of the law from more than four hundred people of diverse backgrounds in order to explore the different ways that people use and experience it. Their fascinating and original study identifies three narratives of law common to the stories people tell. One is based on the perception that the law is magisterial and remote. Another views the law as a game with rules that can be manipulated to one's advantage. A third describes the law as an arbitrary power that can be actively resisted. Drawing on these extensive case studies, Ewick and Silbey interweave individual experiences with an analysis that constructs a coherent and compelling theory of legality. A groundbreaking study of law and narrative, The Common Place of Law shows an institution as it is lived: strange and familiar, imperfect and ordinary, and at the center of daily life. Susan S. Silbey is William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Sociology at Wellesley College.

Why do some people not hesitate to call the police to quiet a barking dog in the middle of the night, while others accept the pain and losses associated with defective products, unsuccesful surgery, and discrimination? I Am Watching You Download

Title: I Am Watching You Pdf

An Amazon Charts bestseller.

What would it take to make you intervene?

When Ella Longfield overhears two attractive young men flirting with teenage girls on a train, she thinks nothing of it—until she realises they are fresh out of prison and her maternal instinct is put on high alert. But just as she’s decided to call for help, something stops her. The next day, she wakes up to the news that one of the girls—beautiful, green-eyed Anna Ballard—has disappeared.

A year later, Anna is still missing. Ella is wracked with guilt over what she failed to do, and she’s not the only one who can’t forget. Someone is sending her threatening letters—letters that make her fear for her life.

Then an anniversary appeal reveals that Anna’s friends and family might have something to hide. Anna’s best friend, Sarah, hasn’t been telling the whole truth about what really happened that night—and her parents have been keeping secrets of their own.

Someone knows where Anna is—and they’re not telling. But they are watching Ella.

At a loss. Is this meant to be a mystery? I am really sick of the many, many mysteries that have become best-sellers lately which don't have any suspense or mystery in them.I feel like warning other people who love mystery not to bother -- unless you are quite forgiving and don't expect any real surprises or things that make sense. So, SOME spoilers*******The writing is flat, the characters are flat, but this didn't, at first deter me from reading it. Agatha Christie is not exactly a great prose writer, and she does manage to surprise the reader and to build interesting cliffhangers and plots.About 50% into the book I was getting a bit fed up, because there was NOTHING happening. There were chapters ending with stuff like "She couldn't tell anyone what she knew" or "He had done something disgusting" -- not exactly this, but this kind of attempt to create suspense.Well, if you do that, then DELIVER. Instead, it just kept going on, and on and on in the same vein, with us not finding anything else, just more of these from the same characters. One girl has a problem with an abusive dad (GROAN) and thinks he may have something to do with her friend's disappearance -- resolved off page. The dad of the disappeared girl has such a big secret he almost kills himself in a barn. The secret turns out to be so pathetic that I got mad at having to read his thoughts for chapters and chapters. Then, shoot, maybe the girl isn't dead, and we have several chapters of EVERYONE looking at the TV at some police negotiation with a kidnapper. But HEY, it isn't her. The way they saw that it isn't her is sooooo ridiculous that I laughed quite a bit.In the meantime, chapters and chapters about the woman who saw the girls on the train but didn't tell the police they went off with young men because she couldn't decide if that was slutty, dangerous or normal. She is supposed to be the main character and she goes on and on and on and on about her flower shop. Then about her son, who got his girlfriend pregnant. NONE of this has any bearing on the mystery. Then she hires a private detective because she is getting postcards saying "I'm watching you."A lot about the detective, his pregnant wife, their baby being born. Not a lot of detecting. Oh, also the "standard police trauma" (he shot an innocent kid) being introduced late in the game and in a perfunctory manner. There are some police people with a grudge against each other which means zilch to the investigation and changes nothing.Clues that are not clues (just people acting strangely) are given chapters and chapters and chapters to then mean nothing and often get resolved off book.About halfway into the story a POV in italics of the typical psycho ("I'm watching you...I don't like her to be watched...etc") gets introduced and is repeated in the same cliché way several times.FINALLY, the mystery is solved in the MOST RIDICULOUS POSSIBLE WAY. Not through anyone figuring anything out, not by the several police that have been introduced or the private detective -- but because the flower lady SEES A PHOTO.At this point I was covering my mouth in disbelief that any book that sells this much could be so awkward, badly written and unsurprising.Just think of the worst, most awkward episode of one of these TV series about crime. It will be better than this, because it will, at least, be forced to have clues and real suspects.I am AT A LOSS! Truly. I loved Gone Girl, I thought Girl on the Train was disappointing after 60%, this one was just a HUGE waste of time for anyone who truly loves mysteries and wants to follow clues, suspects and be surprised. If you're like that, give this a WIDE berth...Okay, But Could Have Been Better There are elements that are very good in Teresa Driscoll’s book, “I Am Watching You.” At the same time, there are other aspects of the book that were bothersome. The book is composed of short chapters, with a number of characters relating the story. The main character is Ella, identified in her titled chapters as The Witness. Ella was on a train ride and thus became one of the last people to see Anna before she disappeared. She was also able to describe the two young men who had approached Anna and her friend, Sarah. Anna’s disappearance and probable murder haunts Ella throughout the book, as she blames herself for not doing anything to protect the young girls, who are both 16 years old.Other characters are introduced, and some are painted as the potential guilty party. Ms. Driscoll makes the guesswork murky as many of the characters have secrets that may or may not be connected with Anna. The overall plot is good, and the author continues to keep us questioning who might have been involved right up to the book’s end. What bothered me about the book was the writing style and some plot specifics. Ms. Driscoll has a habit of using partial sentences, and while these can be effective, they lose their power when used excessively. At first, because the story started off with Ella relating everything in first person, I believed it to be more of a stream-of-consciousness thought process. However, when the author moved to subsequent chapters (everything else in third person), the phrases and partial sentences continued. While it would have worked for Ella to tell her story in that manner, having every character think the same way seemed to blur the characterizations. The other stylistic device used over and over was the introduction of a secret at the end of almost every chapter. Again, this can be a powerful tool, but when used constantly, the story becomes more bothersome than exciting. Most of the story is told a year later, and the investigation into Anna’s disappearance is still being worked on by the police. When the guilty person is finally revealed, it was difficult to believe that the police would have neglected to perform a full investigation (the author tells us at the end that police only did a “cursory” investigation on the person). I hesitate to say more as it would potentially become a spoiler, but for me, this became a fatal flaw and made the ending feel forced.Coupled with the writing issues described a few paragraphs ago, I ended up with mixed feelings the book. I thought this could have been a great story, and there were elements – characters, a good plot idea, a number of misleading side stories, good dialogue – that might have added up to a fantastic read. Unfortunately, the writing style and the inefficient police investigation brought this down to a better-than-average tale. Three-and-a-half stars.
