Title: Consciousness Medicine Pdf Indigenous Wisdom, Entheogens, and Expanded States of Consciousness for Healing and Growth
Author: Francoise Bourzat
Published Date: 2018-06-25

"Consciousness Medicine is an insightful and inspiring introduction to expanded states of consciousness. Françoise Bourzat combines an intimate personal account with the most comprehensive and practical guide I have seen to transpersonal experience and shamanic work, emphasizing the three cornerstones of preparation, journeying and—of essential importance—integration."—Gabor Maté MD, author of In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters With Addiction“A lovely reading experience and immensely informative, this book should be on the bookshelf of everyone interested in the subject of consciousness change and spiritual growth.” —Ann Shulgin, coauthor of PiHKAL and TiHKAL"It is a pleasure to recommend Francoise Bourzat’s Consciousness Medicine. Ms. Bourzat has an extensive background as a teacher and facilitator of altered states of consciousness, utilizing a variety of techniques including meditation, vision quests, sweat lodges, and entheogens. Regarding entheogens, also known as psychedelics and hallucinogens, Ms. Bourzat has done considerable fieldwork among the indigenous Mazatec people of Mexico, who have a vast history and knowledge of the spiritual and healing properties of psilocybin mushrooms and other psychotropic plants. Having worked closely for many years with these native healers, Ms. Bourzat has acquired considerable insight into these ancient practices that she has transmitted to the many contemporary students and seekers whom she has worked with over the past thirty-five years. Given the increasing interest in the range of effects and applications of psychedelic plants in the modern era, Ms. Bourzat’s knowledge holds great relevance to today’s world. As such, this book will make a valuable contribution to our growing knowledge base and appreciation of the salutary potential these compounds possess."—Charles S. Grob, MD, professor of psychiatry, UCLA School of Medicine"Françoise is uniquely qualified to write this book. She not only has the multicultural training and a deep and real connection with indigenous traditional healing techniques, but she has for decades applied, tested, and extended these techniques, specifically for the training of Western therapists. Her own Western training was first class, and perhaps because of that, she is not caught up in idolizing or fantasizing the value of either Western psychodynamic therapies and research or these older systems of indigenous healing. Her work blends both in a blend appropriate for this time and this culture. She has no ideological ax to grind, but only to press for effective practice for the healer and for their clients."—James Fadiman, PhD, author of The Psychedelic Explorer's Guide: Safe, Therapeutic and Sacred Journeys"Francoise Bouzat is courageously and profoundly dedicated to helping others grow and heal to their full potential using the most effective tools of which she is aware. Her commitment to her clients has been forged in the context of the global drug war, which has criminalized psychedelics and has tempered her like steel as she has continued to explore the healing potential of these substances revered in most cultures but demonized in ours. Fortunately for us all, there's a global renaissance in psychedelic research and the therapeutic and spiritual use of psychedelics. Francoise is a visionary pioneer whose life's work is making a major contribution to the process of transforming psychedelics into legal tools for healing and spirituality."—Rick Doblin, founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) "Francoise has been a student and friend of mine for over thirty years.…  When I met Francoise, she was soft-spoken, alert, respectful, and very observant. She was at home. Our Native American way of life is not a religion, it is a "Way of Life." When I met Francoise, she was living this way of life, living in the mountains, living in nature and teaching her students they are one with nature. Francoise was already connected to our Mother Earth and our Way of Life was not a mystery or difficult for her to connect to."—Marilyn Youngbird, Chief Woman among Chiefs, Arikara Nation FRANÇOISE BOURZAT is a consciousness guide and counselor. She has a master’s degree in Somatic Psychology from New College of California and is a Certified Hakomi Practitioner. Residing in the San Francisco Bay Area, she has been weaving the healing potential of expanded states of consciousness and psychology together in her practice for over thirty years. After traveling the world as a young woman, Françoise found her way to San Francisco in the early 1980s. It was there she met her first teacher, a pioneer exploring the intersection of indigenous healing and psychotherapy. She later met her teacher of the last twenty years, an indigenous Mazatec woman leading healing ceremonies with sacred mushrooms in the high mountains of Southern Mexico. Drawing from years of close apprenticeship with her Mazatec teacher, as well as training in other indigenous traditions, Fran.oise has developed a comprehensive approach that bridges Western and indigenous modalities for healing and growth. She trains therapists and facilitators, teaches at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), and lectures internationally.KRISTINA HUNTER is a healing guide, writer, and Certified Hakomi Practitioner living in the San Francisco Bay Area. She has spent over ten years traveling the world, studying the transformative potential of expanded states of consciousness. Her work explores the intersection of psychology, plant medicine, and Buddhist meditation. She offers individual counseling and integration support for psychedelic and initiatory experiences. She also offers mentoring and consultation to healing practitioners who wish to integrate expanded states of consciousness into their practice.

"Françoise Bourzat has written an authoritative book on guided psychedelic therapy with important lessons for anyone thinking of either guiding or being guided.” —Michael Pollan via Twitter

A comprehensive guide to the safe and ethical application of expanded states of consciousness for therapists, healing practitioners, and sincere explorers

Psychedelic medicines also known as entheogens are entering the mainstream. And it’s no wonder: despite having access to the latest wellness trends and advances in technology, we’re no healthier, happier, or more meaningfully connected. Psilocybin mushrooms, ayahuasca, and LSD—as well as other time-tested techniques with the power to shift consciousness such as drumming, meditation, and vision quests—are now being recognized as potent catalysts for change and healing. But how do we ensure that we’re approaching them effectively?

Françoise Bourzat—a counselor and experienced guide with sanctioned training in the Mazatec and other indigenous traditions—and healer Kristina Hunter introduce a holistic model focusing on the threefold process of preparation, journey, and integration. Drawing from more than thirty years of experience, Bourzat’s skillful and heartfelt approach presents the therapeutic application of expanded states, without divorcing them from their traditional contexts. Consciousness Medicine delivers a coherent map for navigating nonordinary states of consciousness, offering an invaluable contribution to the field of healing and transformation.

Alternative therapies work This book is very well written and easy to understand. I am happy to see you more and more books like this published. This book is a practical, step by step guide to safe, ethical and effective psychedelic use. There are lots of ways that these alternatives can be used to make a breakthrough and help with healing. This book provides clear guidance for people using psychedelics and other transformational processes for healing or for their spiritual development, as well as for the therapists who are guiding them along the journey. All you need is an open mind.Excellent Guide for Explorers, Healers, and Therapists After reading Michael Pollan's recent book on psychedelics, I've been delving more into the topic. This is one of my favorite books on the subject because it's interesting, well-written, and provides an excellent guide on how to use entheogens and LSD.There's a lot that can go wrong if one tries to wing it when it comes to using substances to expand one's consciousness. This book is intended to provide concrete guidelines, not only for those exploring the topic for healing and growth but also for therapists and healers. The authors use personal stories and experiences to explain the smart way to prepare, take the journey, and integrate the journey. Thorough information is provided on various techniques, including vision quests, drumming, sweat lodges, yoga, meditation, and, yes, tripping.Really enjoyed this book and found it eased a lot of fears about the experience.Guide to indigenous “meditation” and related practices Ultimately, although I didn’t find anything I would like to bring into my own meditation practices (which are largely based on loving-kindness meditation, along with various movement based meditations), I do think Bourzat and Hunter offer a useful guide to indigenous meditation and other consciousness related practices. This book offers guidance on how to undertake various types of consciousness based practices, with a strong influence of typical “Western” guidance included. For those mainly interested in the entheogens mentioned in the subheading, they are certainly addressed, but this is not basically a “how to take consciousness-altering drugs” guidebook. Here’s a more detailed look at each chapter:Introduction: Weaving Worlds1: Original Rituals: Expanded States of Consciousness for Healing & Growth – early rituals; some science about altered consciousness; modern rituals2: Midwifing the Soul: The Role of the Guide – basic overview of the benefits of having a guide; important aspects in a guide3: Illuminating the Path: The Holistic Model for a Balanced Life – origins of the holistic model for a balanced life; how to use the holistic model for a balanced life: an inventory; the three qualities (wisdom, creativity, love); pure being4: Leaving Home: The Essentials of Preparation – set; setting; using the holistic model for preparation; the afterplan5: Flesh and Bones: Physical Preparation – diet and substances; sexual activity; rest and movement; individual preparation6: Turning Inward: Mental and Emotional Preparation – mindfulness; psychology7: Approaching the Alter: Spiritual Preparation – the alter; cleansing and purification; making offerings; silence and contemplation8: Tending the Web: Community Preparation – importance of community9: Nourishing Our Roots: Environmental Preparation – earth elements (sadly, a brief chapter)10: Entering the Unknown: Journey into an Expanded State – the four phases of a journey (the entry, immersion, reflection, emergence)11: Teachings and Healings: Categories of Transformative Experience – body-centered experiences; mind-centered experiences; cognitive/intellectual processes; emotional processes; the unconscious; spirit-centered experiences; community-centered experiences; environment-centered experiences12: Returning Home: Identifying the Experience and Creating Integrative Practices – the role of the guide in the integration phase (caution if you have no guide); integration framework (the return, identifying the experience, creation and application of integration practices)13: Coming to Our Senses: Integrating Body-Centered Experiences – contraction and pain; numbness and physical disconnection; cathartic release; vital embodiment; calm, stillness, and ease14: The Truth Within: Integrating Mind-Centered Experiences – cognitive/intellectual processes (resistance, insights and guidance); emotional processes (fear and panic, personal confrontation, emotional opening and release, self-love and nourishment); the unconscious (childhood memories, visions)15: The Farthest Shore: Integrating Spirit-Centered Experiences – meaninglessness; reclaiming our spiritual life; messianic and spiritual archetypes (the underlying perfection of all things, ego dissolution)16: All Our Relations: Integrating Community-Centered Experiences - perceiving the impact of isolation; healing our relationships; celebration of belonging; global human family17: Nature’s Mirror: Integrating Environment-Centered Experiences - the pain of living in a toxic environment; realizing our responsibility for nature; merging with the elements; perceiving the intelligence of nature18: Conclusion: Sharing our Transformation with the WorldI will say that I think I may have gotten more from this if there was less focus on recovering from trauma and more on simply focusing on personal growth in all aspects. But that’s JustMe.

Best Wine Education Book on the Market in over 20 years I have been associated with the wine business for over 40 years now. I read over 50 different books dealing with almost every subject of wine. I've read all of Hugh Johnson's classic books about wine. I used to use his books as educational guides when I taught wine appreciation. The WINE FOLLY is a totally amazing book. Its a fresh and new approach to learning about wine. It removes all the old stuffy Wine Snobbery from the past and injects humor, fun and so much more. The book has details that surpass when you normally find in wine books. The author, Madeline Puckette has an uncanny way in providing detail facts that are easy to understand and fun to learn. Once you pick up her book, you cant stop reading it. Its like a classic novel, you want to read more and more, but then afraid when its the end. I believe that every wine retail shop should keep a copy of Wine Folly on their shelves since it is now the marquee of all WIne Educational books. GREAT JOBExcellent book I love it.I was buying the previous version, but in April a friend told me that a new book came out so wait. When the pre-sale came out I bought it, it came out on the 25th set and I arrived, much faster than I expected. The content is very detailed, great info a visual format that is fun and easy to readNnow to enjoy it with a glass of wine!A beginners handbook. Their glossy, graphic book isn't worth it. The stiff binding, bright colors and shiny paper may be costly to produce, but the text lacks passion. I disagree with her point on decanting. Decanters are difficult to clean and most of those odd shaped decanters could easily break and would look positively absurd on a table. Bottles don't take up as much space and there's no way to know if the waiter poured an ordinary wine into a decanter instead of the pricey wine you ordered. And it's part of the experience to read a vinter's label. There was no picture of a stoppered decanter. She says it's possible to decant Champagne. Well, yes, it's possible, but I would strongly suggest that you don't. More than a third of their book is devoted to different grape varieties. Every variety is listed, but grape varieties aren't always printed on labels. And why were there only 6 pages about California and only 16 pages on France? Her wine book is as ordinary as an encyclopedia. What bothered me most was that there was no mention of greatness...extraordinary vineyards weren't listed. No vineyards were listed or given credit for their quality. I want sensory perception, feelings, what's it's like to explore a musty dank cave in St. Emilion. There are finer books on wine, so I won't recommend theirs.

Modern design for a new age of Southern living.

Tour eleven diverse homes in the deep South―makeovers, remodels, and new construction―as James Farmer brings together a cultivated mix of high and low, storied and new, collected and found; presenting them all as a thoughtfully exhibited array of taste, style, good architecture, and interior comfort. Woven alongside beautiful photography are personal stories James shares about living in the South, the people in his life, and how he fell in love with a career of making houses into homes.

A beautiful book to inspire Southern style at home―infusing the new with antique, vintage, and heirloom pieces.

Emily Followill’s photography has been featured in her own book, Southern Rustic Cabin, as well as several previous James Farmer books and magazines including Veranda and Garden & Gun. She lives in Atlanta.

A Little on the "down home" side I am sorry that I am not as thrilled with this book as others are. I was expecting something a little more elegant. The photography is fine, it is just that the rooms look like something out of anyone's commonplace home in a small town somewhere, not that there is anything wrong with that, but I was expecting something a little more inspiring. Just kind of plain for an interior design book.Move over Pinterest! I cannot say enough good things about this book! Move over Pinterest this is where I am coming back for inspiration!! James Farmer mixes Southern style with a touch of upscale all while looking effortlessly welcoming and warm. Think the Reese Witherspoon of decorating!Inspirational, Delightful, Beauty-filled.... A Must Read This is a real gem! Style and class jump off every page. THANKS to James Farmer for sharing his talent and expertise in such lovely, inspiring ways. I am getting so may ideas for arranging and rearranging items in my home. A lived-in, loved-in home is very important!

Title: Turn Left at Orion Pdf Hundreds of Night Sky Objects to See in a Home Telescope - and How to Find Them
Author: Guy Consolmagno
Published Date: 2018-09-30
Page: 256

Praise for previous editions: 'This is quite possibly the most inviting guidebook ever written to help people with binoculars and small telescopes find, view, understand, and most of all, enjoy everything in the night sky from the Moon and planets to distant star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies. And if you think it's only for beginners, think again - every telescope owner should have a copy.' Dennis Di Cicco, Senior Editor, Sky & TelescopePraise for previous editions: 'Turn Left at Orion is an essential guide for both beginners and more experienced amateur astronomers who will find much inside to reinvigorate their passion for the stars. The diagrams are simple, clear and functional, and the text eloquently captures the excitement of observing. Stargazing has never been made so easy, and if you buy just one book on observational astronomy, make sure it's this one.' Keith Cooper, Editor, Astronomy NowPraise for previous editions: 'Since it first appeared in 1989, Turn Left at Orion has been an indispensable guidebook for the amateur astronomer possessing nothing more than a small backyard telescope. This is not only an essential handbook for the novice, it's a useful reference for the seasoned backyard astronomer. Simply put, whatever your level of experience, you must have this book!' Glenn Chaple, Contributing Editor, Astronomy This unique and best-selling guidebook to the night sky shows amateur astronomers how to observe a host of celestial wonders. Its distinct format of object-by-object spreads illustrates how deep-sky objects and planets will actually look in a small telescope, with large pages and spiral binding for ease of use outside.

With over 150,000 copies sold since its first publication, this is one of the most popular astronomy books of all time. This unique guidebook to the night sky shows you how to observe a host of celestial wonders. Its distinct format of object-by-object spreads illustrates how deep-sky objects and planets actually look through a small telescope, while its large pages and spiral binding allow for use outside. Along with updated star names and astronomical information, this new edition provides links to a dedicated webpage with up-to-date tables and images, and an improved planets chapter. The many Dobsonian-friendly images and small telescope views have been revised to account for changes in modern telescope technology, such as larger field of view eyepieces. With dedicated chapters on Northern and Southern Hemisphere objects, it's never been easier to explore the night sky, wherever you are. Additional resources are available on the accompanying website: www.cambridge.org/turnleft.

Great book for an introduction to stargazing I purchased this book to help introduce me to the night sky and viewing through a telescope. My reason for selecting this book in particular was the great reviews left by other readers. This book lives up to its reputation. It provides basic information about stargazing with instructions for sighting objects in the sky during different seasons. It also provides drawings of what you should see in your eyepiece in both a small telescope and a larger telescope. This is a great book for beginners. An Excellent Guide An excellent guide for beginners and useful for experienced sky-gazers, too. The illustrations that show how various deep-sky objects will appear in small, 2" to 4" scopes and medium, 8" to 10" scopes (though why skip the 5" to 6" scopes?) are priceless. This is the sort of thing that everybody needs to see before buying a first scope; too many uninformed T-scope purchasers (for themselves or as gifts for kids) have over-inflated expectations regarding what they'll be able to see with a back-yard scope and are often disappointed. This guide is also outstanding in that it makes it quite easy for novice star-gazers to actually find many interesting objects to view without having to use more complex star charts. Yup, this should have been my first recreational astronomy guide years ago, but glad that I finally got it, now.Belongs in your library now!!!! Started to get this book many times over the years. Just never did. Sorry I didn't and glad I waited. REALLY like this new addition !! It reminds me of some of the old astronomy series that I used to have from Edmond scientific. Very user friendly and wonderful to use.I'm in my 70's and been doing this for alot of years. This book works for me now and it would have been great w a y back many years ago. I think it will do for you too!Don't put it off like I did. Get it now. You'll be glad you did.

We Want to Do More Than Survive Pdf

ISBN: 0807069159
Title: We Want to Do More Than Survive Pdf Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom
Author: Bettina Love
Published Date: 2019
Page: 200

“A useful rejoinder, half a century on, to Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed; deserving of a broad audience among teachers and educational policymakers.”—Kirkus Reviews“This text is helpful for gaining a better grasp of oppression and what teachers can do about it.”—Library Journal“Offering readers a profoundly fresh perspective on teaching, Bettina Love breaks new ground. Using both the language of critical thinking and radical resistance, this book challenges and dares us all to teach for justice.”—bell hooks“Through unflinching and daring inquiry, Dr. Bettina Love has stepped out on faith to articulate our pain, suffering, and eternal search for joy. Her words resurrect the abolitionist credo of ‘education’ over ‘school.’ Because they are two different things, the question remains: can school be the place where education happens or do we need to radically rethink what we’re doing? Dr. Love’s work suggests that if we do not choose the latter, we are complicit in our own demise.”—David Stovall, professor of African American studies and criminology, law, and justice, University of Illinois at Chicago, and coauthor of Twenty-First-Century Jim Crow Schools“This book is exactly what we need: a powerful indictment of our education system as an industry that robs dark children of their potential. Dr. Love challenges us to become abolitionists by holding ourselves and our colleagues accountable for our complicity in perpetuating the ‘educational survival complex.’ As educators, we must recognize the impact of whiteness on our classrooms, demand the impossible, welcome the struggle, and refuse to oppress dark children by calling out racism, recognizing our students’ cultures and histories, and showing them they matter to our communities and to our world. This isn’t about reform; it’s about freedom, and I’m moving from ally to coconspirator. Every educator needs to read this book, to freedom dream, and to challenge oppression with intersectional justice.”—Mandy Manning, 2018 National Teacher of the Year“This much-needed book is at once personal, analytic, poetic, exacting, and soaring. Dr. Bettina Love brilliantly weaves, in artisanal and scholarly fashion, the threads and fabric of history, the present, and the possible future. She weaves in a way that we are invited to understand what moving past survival means, in personal, communal, and nation-building ways. This book is a call to building a different future: one made for freedom.”—Leigh Patel, author of Decolonizing Educational Research“This book is a treasure! With rigorous intersectional theory, careful cultural criticism, and brave personal reflection, We Want To Do More Than Survive dares us to dream and struggle toward richer and thicker forms of educational freedom. With the mind of a scholar and the heart of a revolutionary, Bettina Love has penned a book that places her in the tradition of Freire, Giroux, hooks, and Ladson-Billlings. This beautiful text also affirms her position as one of the leading education scholars of her generation.”—Marc Lamont Hill, author of Nobody: Casualties of America’s War on the Vulnerable, from Ferguson to Flint and Beyond“We Want To Do More Than Survive is endarkened feminist wisdom in dark times. In the tradition of a skilled kente weaver, Dr. Love brings together abolitionist traditions of educational freedom work with contemporary struggles for Black humanity and creates a stunning tribute to the absolute necessity of joy and love in resistance struggles. What sets this book apart is Love’s critical understanding that the splendor of kente is seen not in the weaver’s individual efforts or strips of cloth, but instead when those pieces are woven together to illuminate our larger narrative as people of color in community. That narrative of Black freedom dreaming is this book you hold in your hands. And it is a must-read for those who love dark people, who love education, and who love the possibilities of educational freedom as intersectional justice right now.”—Cynthia B. Dillard (Nana Mansa II of Mpeasem, Ghana), Mary Frances Early Endowed Professor of Teacher Education, University of Georgia, and author of On Spiritual Strivings: Transforming an African American Woman's Academic Life“Bettina Love has managed to write a book that is both a love song to our children and a potent weapon. Part memoir, part manual, part manifesto, We Want to Do More Than Survive explains that abolitionist teaching is neither a new set of standards nor a social justice curriculum, but a revolutionary commitment to transforming ourselves, our country, and the world. Written in breathtaking prose and bold cadences, it reminds us that ‘mattering’ is a verb, and making sure all of our kids truly matter is unfinished business for which we are all responsible. Educator or not, read this book: it is our North Star.”—Robin D. G. Kelley, author of Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination Bettina L. Love is an award-winning author and an associate professor of educational theory and practice at the University of Georgia. Her research focuses on how teachers and schools working with parents and communities can build communal, civically engaged, antiracist, antihomophobic, and antisexist educational, equitable classrooms. A sought-after public speaker on a range of topics, including hip-hop education, Black girlhood, queer youth, hip-hop feminism, art-based education to foster youth civic engagement, and issues of diversity, Love has also provided commentary for news outlets including NPR, the Guardian, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Drawing on personal stories, research, and historical events, an esteemed educator offers a vision of educational justice inspired by the rebellious spirit and methods of abolitionists.

Drawing on her life’s work of teaching and researching in urban schools, Bettina Love persuasively argues that educators must teach students about racial violence, oppression, and how to make sustainable change in their communities through radical civic initiatives and movements. She argues that the US educational system is maintained by and profits from the suffering of children of color. Instead of trying to repair a flawed system, educational reformers offer survival tactics in the forms of test-taking skills, acronyms, grit labs, and character education, which Love calls the educational survival complex.

To dismantle the educational survival complex and to achieve educational freedom—not merely reform—teachers, parents, and community leaders must approach education with the imagination, determination, boldness, and urgency of an abolitionist. Following in the tradition of activists like Ella Baker, Bayard Rustin, and Fannie Lou Hamer, We Want to Do More Than Survive introduces an alternative to traditional modes of educational reform and expands our ideas of civic engagement and intersectional justice.

Abolitionist teaching Bettina Love addresses what is needed for people of color in the United States to thrive rather than merely survive. She passionately argues for the need to create new systems and structures for educational, political, economic, and community freedom. While Love as an educator focuses the book primarily on the educational system, she also addresses the challenges that must be confronted in the wider American culture. She recognizes the intersectionality of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, nationalism, and dis/ability. Love advocates for abolitionist teaching, which is working in solidarity with communities of color to eradicate injustice in and outside of schools. Love defines what abolitionist teaching is and what it must accomplish, but this is not a how-to book providing a specific process for implementation. The strength of the book is to get readers to recognize that those on the margins of society are excluded because of systemic barriers. Educational reforms will be ineffective unless they address the root causes of injustice. Educators are not the only ones who should read this book. Every American concerned about the future of our nation can learn much from reading this volume.A transformative call to action This book is a must-read for every educator. It is completely transformative; and most importantly it's a call to action. Not in the gimmicky way that so many initiatives get pushed forward in districts, but in a real, down to earth way that begs and pleads educators to be human. Take a good hard look at yourself, your practices, your beliefs, your understandings, your own implicit bias. Look at your students as the beautiful, strong humans they are and the beautiful, strong, empowered humans they could be when given the tools to reach their potential. It's not about any kind of fix, or initiative, or data survey or test score. It's about humans helping humans. The only way to do that is to ask those same questions of your students. Not in a hypothetical sense where you make up the answers based on the visible, but really talk to your students. Dive deep into who they are and who they want to become. Then consider the power you have to raise them up!Fighting for justice An indictment of the American education establishment, especially as it relates to the classrooms inhabited by "dark" bodies: the author favors the "dark" term as one that includes a wide variety of people who suffer from a history of injustice and oppression. She casts a critical eye on a number of gimmicks that are popular these days: the KIPP school movement, or the idea of teaching "grit" (this was a new one on me, but that particular gimmick certainly sets off my BS detector!). Education nowadays is largely based on perpetuating a culture based on White rage. Instead of gimmickry, she advocates the radical mindset which was typical of the abolitionists of the 19th century: hence the subtitle "Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom." As she says, rather than simply being allies, right-thinking people need to be co-conspirators, willing to put their bodies on the line to overturn the system. A book that won't provide much comfort to any people on any side, but which may get them thinking.
