Marianne Schneider Corey is a licensed marriage and family therapist in California and a National Certified Counselor. She received her master's degree in marriage, family and child counseling from Chapman College. A Fellow of the Association for Specialists in Group Work, she and Gerald Corey received its Eminent Career Award in 2001. In 2011 they received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Mental Health Counselors Association, of which she is a member. She also holds memberships in the American Counseling Association, the American Group Psychotherapy Association, the Association for Specialists in Group Work, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and the Western Association of Counselor Education and Supervision. In the past 40 years, she and Gerald Corey have presented workshops in group counseling for mental health professionals at universities in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Germany, Belgium, Scotland, England and Ireland. In addition to BECOMING A HELPER, which has been translated into Korean and Japanese, she is co-author of ISSUES AND ETHICS IN THE HELPING PROFESSIONS, 10th Edition (with Gerald Corey and Cindy Corey), which has been translated into Japanese, Chinese and Korean; GROUPS: PROCESS AND PRACTICE, 10th Edition (with Gerald Corey and Cindy Corey), which has been translated into Korean, Chinese and Polish; I NEVER KNEW I HAD A CHOICE, 11th Edition (with Gerald Corey and Michelle Muratori), which has been translated into Chinese; and GROUP TECHNIQUES, Fourth Edition (with Gerald Corey, Patrick Callanan and Michael Russell), which has been translated into Portuguese, Korean, Japanese and Czech. Along with Gerald Corey and Robert Haynes, she also created two educational video programs: "Groups in Action: Evolution and Challenges DVD and Workbook" (2014) and "Ethics in Action: DVD and Workbook" (2015).
this text is garbage. Constructively speaking I am going to have to disagree with a lot of the positive reviews of this book. This was required text in not one but two grad level classes for mental health counseling. While I typically have positive comments related to the Coreys; this text is garbage. Constructively speaking, the book--for a 9th edition--is severely unorganized. While it reads less like a traditional textbook, it appears more random and stream-of-consciousness than any text I have ever read. The bulk of the chapters all the seem the same. I tend to read and use a highlighter for important parts; I rarely highlighted. It just drolls on and on never really making much of a point. I found myself having to highlight entire paragraphs to make sense rather than simply using one or two well-written sentences. I honestly felt like they had asked the authors to give an impromptu speech about group therapy and they simply had someone transcribe whatever they said. Occasionally, in a later chapter, it seems like they will simply make a comment about something they discussed and forgot to mention earlier. The text does present some interesting group formats for specific populations but they seem a little too specific for use in an introductory group text. While this was required for me, a much better text is Gerald Corey's Group Techniques (I read the 3rd edition). This book is about 1/4 of the length and is very succinct and better written. If you have a choice in the matter, go with the Group Techniques book rather than this mess. Noted are that the Group Techniques does not address community or school groups where as this text does. You're not missing much though.Eh. Cost does not match quality, should be cheaper. The book served its purpose. However the condition of the book did not justify the price I paid to rent. Some of the pages were loose and eventually a good chunk of pages came out so it was a hassle making sure I kept all the pages together. Eventually I stopped using it. I'll be returning this but a chunk of pages are not attached to the book anymore.eh This book was okay. It is well-written and fairly easy to read. It was required for our group counseling course (grad-level), which is for both clinical mental health and school counseling students. This book definitely is geared towards the therapeutic group rather than a school group. We were told that it is the best group book out there.We also watched the dvd during the course. It does a nice job showing what a therapeutic group can/should look like at each stage; however, I do wish they had just followed one or two people through the dvd because it was hard to actually see the growth in the participants due to editing.
