"Joanna’s work is always flawless. I have long admired her perfectly clean lettering and lively compositions, and the patience and attention to detail that it takes to create such masterpieces. I have had the pleasure of having Joanna as a student in one of my calligraphy workshops (where I was admittedly very nervous that I couldn’t teach such a prolific letterer even one little thing), but now I am so excited to be her student as I work through this beautiful book and soak up all of her wonderful tricks and tips."―Anne Robin, founder of Anne Robin Calligraphy + Design“Joanna is an incredibly talented lettering artist whose fresh, bold work I have admired for years. Clear and inspiring, The Art of Hand Lettering is the perfect introduction to the basics of hand-drawn type. Joanna presents–and beautifully illustrates–essential terms, tools, and techniques every beginner needs. In addition to exemplar sheets for eight distinct lettering styles, Joanna shares pro tips for connecting letters, adding dimension, flourishing, and plotting layout designs. The second half of the book is a goldmine of bite-sized DIY projects, with easy-to-follow instructions for envelopes, place cards, party décor, home accessories, and more. I will be enthusiastically recommending The Art of Hand Lettering to calligraphy students looking for resources on hand-drawn type.”―Molly Suber Thorpe author of Modern Calligraphy and The Calligrapher's Business Handbook"Hand lettering is an imperfect art form, yet Joanna has a process that makes it look flawless…She is a true professional in this field, with infinite lettering wisdom and knowledge. The Art of Hand Lettering for Beginners is a true reflection of her experience, dedication, and passion, and will be a valuable resource no matter where you are on your design journey."―Brooke Robinson, chief curator and founder of Goodtype“I'm impressed with Joanna Muñoz's book for being so accessible and valuable to any beginning lettering artist. Not only does the book provide valuable tips and techniques, but it also has helpful and uncomplicated step-by-step instructions that walk readers through the creation of their own beautiful DIY lettering projects. I wish I'd had this book when I was starting out as a lettering artist myself, and wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone wanting to get started in lettering.”―Becca Clason, tactile lettering artist“Hand lettering can seem like a challenging thing to learn when you’re just starting out, so I loved the way Joanna broke the process down into easy-to-understand steps. What sets this book apart from the many other lettering books I’ve read is that in addition to walking you through the technical process of hand lettering, it also provides creative project ideas for you to then apply your newly learned skills!”―Lauren Hom, founder of Hom Sweet Hom Lettering & IllustrationJoanna Muñoz is a Los Angeles–based art director and designer, and the artist behind Wink & Wonder. She discovered lettering in 2013 and quickly fell in love with the craft. Combined with over a decade of experience in the creative field, Joanna has since turned her lettering hobby into a steady freelance business working with local, national, and international clients ranging from bridal magazines to greeting card companies, film studios, and more.

Very Useful Tool for Learning Hand Lettering I have been following Joanna on Instagram for a while now, because I enjoy her sense of humor and love her style. I am not very good at learning things online because of the distractions, so a physical copy of her book is what I needed to get started. I didn't even know there was a difference between lettering and calligraphy! I have a graphic design background, and though I don't really do much with it anymore, I've always wanted to pick up hand lettering. This beginners book is great because it tells you what tools to buy (even some you'd think hand lettering is above, but are so simple), and it helps you with every brush stroke.I love this book because she has multiple pages with guidelines on different font styles and instructions on where to start with each letter. To practice, I scan in the pages and trace over her work, just to get the feel down and until I feel comfortable enough to move on to giving it a go on my own. I typeset a couple of my favorite movie quotes and framed them. My goal is to use this book to help me replace them with my own hand-lettered stuff!Perfect gift. Great starter book for girls.Expert in her field, with a personal touch. Everything you want to know about hand writing and lettering when you're an absolute beginner. Her explanations are thorough and precise. The personal story is a great touch. My handwriting is 10x better having read this book!

Title: The Mist Pdf

Stephen King is the author of more than sixty books, all of them worldwide bestsellers. His recent work includes The Institute, Elevation, The Outsider, Sleeping Beauties (cowritten with his son Owen King) and the Bill Hodges trilogy, End of Watch, Finders Keepers, and Mr. Mercedes (an Edgar Award winner for Best Novel and an AT&T Audience Network original television series). His novel 11/22/63 was named a top ten book of 2011 by The New York Times Book Review and won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Mystery/Thriller. His epic works The Dark Tower and It are the basis for major motion pictures, with It now the highest grossing horror film of all time. He is the recipient of the 2018 PEN America Literary Service Award, the 2014 National Medal of Arts, and the 2003 National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. He lives in Bangor, Maine, with his wife, novelist Tabitha King. The Mist

#1 New York Times bestselling author Stephen King’s terrifying novella about a town engulfed in a dense, mysterious mist as humanity makes its last stand against unholy destruction—originally published in the acclaimed short story collection Skeleton Crew and made into a TV series, as well as a feature film starring Thomas Jane and Marcia Gay Harden.

In the wake of a summer storm, terror descends...David Drayton, his son Billy, and their neighbor Brent Norton join dozens of others and head to the local grocery store to replenish supplies following a freak storm. Once there, they become trapped by a strange mist that has enveloped the town. As the confinement takes its toll on their nerves, a religious zealot, Mrs. Carmody, begins to play on their fears to convince them that this is God’s vengeance for their sins. She insists a sacrifice must be made and two groups—those for and those against—are aligned. Clearly, staying in the store may prove fatal, and the Draytons, along with store employee Ollie Weeks, Amanda Dumfries, Irene Reppler, and Dan Miller, attempt to make their escape. But what’s out there may be worse than what they left behind.

This exhilarating novella explores the horror in both the enemy you know—and the one you can only imagine.

(Vague Spoilers) Very well put together short story. Likes: great character building (seemingly as always with his books), descriptive environments, and different from the movie which I unfortunately watched first. I think I liked how well he describes the way the characters are reacting to the situation as it occurs. People don’t just band together, and save the day during a crisis. Especially something as dark and preternatural as this, people would simply go crazy, or latch onto anything for that sliver of release from their fears.Dislikes: he even criticized it, but the ambiguity the ending brings. I enjoy being left to interpret some things, but I felt this left too much to the reader. I felt the stereotypes used are a bit played out; religious zealot, dumb country bumpkins, etc. I did feel the relationship between the main character and another supporting character was completely unnecessary, and honestly didn’t make sense. I think that he projected himself onto the main character a little which can be a turnoff for me.All in all this is another excellent Stephen King story.Creepy As Hell! I remember moving to Viriginia from NYC shortly after getting married in the fall of 1997. I was a diehard reader. Having commuted to and from work in NY, I got plenty of time to read riding on the subways. In Virginia though, specifically Northern Va, it's drive, drive, drive. My commute was 60 miles round trip daily and this cut into my read time heavily. This is where my foray into Audio books came in. I went right for one that was written by one of my favorite authors Stephen King. Confession: I had actually read this book in novel format, but never listened to an audio book before. I was surprised how good the novel remained having now been acted out with actors. The movie remake was exceptional too, but nothing like the creepiness of this book when I first read it. I never get tired of reading a Stephen King novel and definitely have not lost that creepy feeling whenever I read this book over and over again. The open-ended ending leaves a bit to be desired, but it doesn't mess it up for me. It's still one of my favorite Stephen King books ever!Love the King I got back into reading thanks to Stephen King, having stopped reading after graduating high school. After working through some of his works, 'The Shining' being the novel that truly wet my mouth for more, I ventured off to taste the work of other authors. I was safe with the King but that couldn't be what reading was about for me, or eventually I'd find myself without anything else to read, thus giving up reading for a second and possibly final time.So it has been a few months since my last King book, and reading 'The Mist' reminded me how potent good writing can be.I LOVE 'The Mist'. I saw the movie first, years ago, and was dumbstruck. This novel only solidifies my gawking at his horror. This book doesn't just present you with evil monsters outside in the mist. In fact, King reveals the monsters INSIDE the store, and the psychology of fear and anger and the deadly combination of the two.Mob mentality is truly something to witness, and King brings us as close as he can while tempers rose and fear swallows them up resulting in death and more death.Being as I just finished, I could ramble on forever honestly. This is a quick, gripping novella that shows Kings teeth are as sharp regardless of his story's length. If you haven't read any King before (how can that be?!) then this is a great story to start with. If you have experience with King but haven't experienced 'The Mist', do something nice for yourself and dive in!

Somewhere Towards the End Pdf

ISBN: 0393338002
Title: Somewhere Towards the End Pdf A Memoir
Author: Diana Athill
Published Date: 2009-12-07
Page: 182

“Athill writes…with clarity, calm, and common sense.” - Barbara Fisher, Boston Globe“Life, not death, is her preoccupation…Reflections on old age, rather than on a long life lived are rare…It is rarer still for a woman to write such a book: so Athill’s candor and economic prose on religion, regrets, and sex are invigorating.” - Emma Jacobs, Financial Times“Jean Rhys said that literature was a lake, and what mattered was to contribute to it, even if only a trickle. She contributed a narrow boiling river. Diana Athill has contributed a cool clear burn.” - Carole Angier, Literary Review“A great gift. . . . This is a warm, inspiring book.” - Susan Salter Reynolds, Los Angeles Times“Bracingly frank…joyful rather than grim… she offers clear-eyed wisdom of the grandma-you-wish-you’d-had variety.” - People“To paraphrase Shakespeare, wisdom is bred in neither the heart nor the head, but in the bones that carry us through the decades. A few very talented artists, like Diana Athill, may persuade their old bones to yield up a glimpse or two of what they’ve learned.” - Laura Miller, Salon“There is something terrifically comforting about a nonagenarian writing with clarity, wit and verve about getting old and facing death. . . . [Athill] evokes another grande dame of British letters in her uninhibited lifestyle and no-holds-barred, clarion voice: last year’s Nobel Prize winner, Doris Lessing.” - N. Heller McAlpin, San Francisco Chronicle“Welcome and original.” - Dwight Garner, The New York Times“She writes as a person of wide-ranging learning, a generalist, a lover of men and animals and a garden enthusiast, a person intoxicated with life.” - Erica Jong, The New York Times Book Review“A spry dispatch on the condition of being elderly.” - The New Yorker After a distinguished career as a book editor, Diana Athill (1917―2019) won the National Book Critics Circle and Costa Biography Awards for her New York Times best-selling memoir Somewhere Towards the End. In January 2009, she was presented with an Order of the British Empire.

Winner of the 2009 National Book Critics Circle Award in Autobiography and a New York Times bestseller: a prize-winning, critically acclaimed memoir on life and aging ―“An honest joy to read” (Alice Munro).

Hailed as “a virtuoso exercise” (Sunday Telegraph), this book reflects candidly, sometimes with great humor, on the condition of being old. Charming readers, writers, and critics alike, the memoir won the Costa Award for Biography and made Athill, now ninety-one, a surprising literary star.

Diana Athill is one of the great editors in British publishing. For more than five decades she edited the likes of V. S. Naipaul and Jean Rhys, for whom she was a confidante and caretaker. As a writer, Athill has made her reputation for the frankness and precisely expressed wisdom of her memoirs. Now in her ninety-first year, "entirely untamed about both old and new conventions" (Literary Review) and freed from any of the inhibitions that even she may have once had, Athill reflects candidly, and sometimes with great humor, on the condition of being old―the losses and occasionally the gains that age brings, the wisdom and fortitude required to face death. Distinguished by "remarkable intelligence...[and the] easy elegance of her prose" (Daily Telegraph), this short, well-crafted book, hailed as "a virtuoso exercise" (Sunday Telegraph) presents an inspiring work for those hoping to flourish in their later years.

Woman of substance at peace with aging A terrifically talented British publishing professional looks at life as she is living it in her 80s, and moves from subject to subject with great honesty, almost no sentimentality and absolutely no "humble bragging.". She's forthcoming and clear about her past loves, unflinching about her future and what age takes away, and manages to be uplifting and reassuring about life without dispensing easy advice. She lights the reader's way into their own advanced maturity by simply telling her particular life and being an individual of perception. So this collection of essays is a rarity. Athill has published more since, so her look here at one's prospects for one's dwindling days is happily not "the end" of her reflections.Surprisingly refreshing Near the end of her life, Diana Athill has written an entertaining and thoughtful record of living and of the experience of growing older. The physical incapacities that every human being faces, the change in focus after retirement, and the refreshing feeling of "letting go" of many things that occupied her in earlier years. Her frankness about both her lack of faith and lack of desire for children, her fears about having a "nub" of selfishness deep inside her, and her delight in becoming an author so much later in life that it didn't turn her head but proved to be a delight are views that we aren't often privy to.Award-winning/ For the life of me, I can't understand why this book won an award. I, too, am "somewhere towards the end," although not quite as far as Athill [of course, one never knows]. To me, this is a very ordinary account of the thoughts and experiences of an older woman, some of them mildly interesting. I suppose the anal retentive part of my personality led me to finish it, but certainly not the pleasure-seeking one.
